6 Tips for Metal Roofing Installation

JD Metals Black Standing Seam

When preparing for metal roofing installation, you should keep the following tips in mind:

Choose the metal roofing panel profile for the roof and understand the way the panels overlap. For example, tuff-rib and standing seam profiles have a different overlap and fastening system. View our panel profiles here.

Be sure your substrate is solid and is sturdy enough to handle the metal roofing panels. Any weak points or damage to an existing substrate could result in failure of the metal panels.

Fasteners: These will make the difference between a water-tight roof and one that leaks. Know which type of screws or fasteners you will need to install the roofing panels and trims such as metal-to-metal screws or pancake head screws. Learn more about the fasteners we recommend here.

Know which trims and accessories you may need for the roofing project such as pipe boots and flashing. Different panel profiles may require different trims to complete the installation. Learn more about our accessories here.

Know where your fasteners go! Metal roofing fasteners need to be drilled into the correct area in order to keep your metal roof watertight. For example, JD Metals recommends on the flat area beside the rib, not the rib itself, for Tuff-rib installation.
